Research indicates that a poor diet can turn on genes that express illness, while a good diet can prevent this. Dog kibble is a highly processed food and can be equated to a human eating nothing but “fast food” and wondering why they are getting sicker by the day. When I was a child, one small town vet could easily handle all the dogs and cats in town, but today, animal hospitals are everywhere, and they are overwhelmed.
Back in my day, we fed our dogs leftovers, and very little kibble, if any at all. Things like food allergies, ear infections, stomach sensitivities, and cancer were never heard of. I can’t remember my dog(s) ever getting sick! These are the illnesses that plague our dogs today, and “convenience diet” kibble is one very good reason.
Cook for your pet and avoid the vet! Make a Crockpot full of real human food for your dog. You may be surprised how much less expensive it is than “premium” kibble. Add ground turkey, chicken or beef liver, grass fed beef, the head of a salmon (costs about $2.50), eggs, or some other organic meat on sale, with barley, oats, brown rice, sweet potato, or lentils for carbs, and then flax meal and a vegetable. Your choice of meat should be 50% of the total recipe.
It couldn’t be easier, and dogs love this! They smell it all night long, and know its for them! We top it all off with a handful or two of holistic kibble, a small amount of raw extra virgin coconut oil, and greek yogurt. Then watch them gobble it all up! Feed them raw chicken backs and wings and raw beef bones from your grocer (and when they chewed all the marrow out, fill it with cheese or crock pot porridge, and freeze for when they’re teething). You can look on line for other home-cooked or raw recipes.
If you must feed kibble, take a look at the dogfoodadvisor.com for the latest updates on all the brands of dog food, including raw foods, canned and recalls. They explain what that dog food label is really (not) telling you. We were simply shocked at what we found out from that website, like an ingredient listed as “meat” could be cats, dogs, zoo animals, etc. and they don’t really want you to know. Or that choosing a puppy food kibble should be done with a lot of consideration, because too much protein or calcium can lead to degenerative joint disease in large breeds.
Do you really want your dog to eat the exact same formula every day for years and years anyway? When you think about all the kibble issues, feeding them what you’re having for dinner makes clear sense.

Orijen
Our Australian Labradoodle pups are fed a diet of homemade foods, Nuvet powdered immune system builder, and Orijen puppy kibble. After much research, we feel Orijen is by far a superior kibble. It is made entirely of human "high" grade meats, nothing rendered, no by products, etc. and they tell you exactly how many pounds of each meat item is in that size bag. Even the eggs are free range eggs. It is high in protein, and the large breed formula can be used instead for our larger doodles
You can order this on Chewy.com prior to your pup coming home. Delivery is free for orders over $45, and takes two days. They are an amazing company to work with (superior customer service that will have you smiling if there is ever a problem) and far less pricey than pet stores.
